Description

A comforting dish that combines ground beef with savory spices and a creamy sauce, perfect for family gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 pounds ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • Mashed potatoes (for serving, optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Brown the beef: In a large skillet over medium heat, add your ground beef. Use a spatula to break it apart as it cooks. Stir occasionally for about 6-8 minutes.
  3. Sauté the onions: Add the chopped onion to the skillet during the last couple of minutes of cooking the beef. Let them soften and become translucent—about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Season it up: Stir in the salt, black pepper, and garlic powder.
  5. Make the sauce: Sprinkle the flour over the beef mixture and stir well. Gradually whisk in the beef broth and milk, ensuring there are no lumps.
  6. Incorporate the sour cream: Once the sauce is nice and thick, remove the skillet from the heat and stir in the melted butter and sour cream.
  7. Bake it up: Pour the beef mixture into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish. Bake uncovered for about 30-35 minutes.
  8. Serve it hot: Once out of the oven, let it rest for about 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

For a lighter option, substitute ground beef with ground turkey or chicken. You can also mix in vegetables like peas or corn for added nutrition.
