Description

Delicious homemade apple bars filled with sweet and tart apples and warm spices, perfect for cozy moments in the kitchen.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups old-fashioned oats
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
  • 3 cups apples, peeled and chopped
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 12 tablespoons milk (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, oats, granulated sugar, brown sugar, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Mix until well incorporated.
  3. Add in the cold, cubed butter. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Reserve about 1 1/2 cups of the mixture for the topping. Press the remaining mixture into the bottom of a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
  5. Bake the crust for about 10-12 minutes until it’s lightly golden.
  6. In a large bowl, combine the chopped apples, lemon juice, cornstarch, and vanilla extract.
  7. Once your crust has finished baking, remove it from the oven and spread the apple mixture evenly over the crust.
  8. Return the baking dish to the oven and bake for an additional 25-30 minutes, or until the topping is golden and the apples are bubbly.
  9. Allow the apple bars to cool in the pan for about 15 minutes.
  10. Mix the powdered sugar and milk together to create a glaze and drizzle it over the top of the cooled bars.
  11. Cut into squares and serve warm or at room temperature.
